General Good Practice Plumbing Tips
Good Practice for Plumbing
If you are installing tanks and fitting pipes to them be sure to cover the ends of the pipes with tape to stop pieces of plastic and swarf from dropping down them, the bits and pieces will block taps later on and cause all kinds of problems.
Showers
If the water pressure is very poor in your shower it may be due to lime-scale build up.
If you live in a hard water area you should clean your shower heads every three months or so.
If the scale is too bad it may be an idea to get either a new hose, or a new shower head.
Hot Water Plumbing
Being without hot water does not always mean that you have to replace your existing hot water service. Repairs are often an option. A preventative maintenance service and inspection of your hot water unit may help avoid costly afterhours repairs or replacements and prolong the life of your existing hot water system.
Plumbing Repairs
Ensuring you have the correct tools for the job is essential.
If you don’t have a piece of heavy duty machinery for a job it is usually possible to obtain one through equipment leasing.
It’s usually a cheaper alternative than hiring a contractor or buying it outright.
PTFE Tape
Remember to use PTFE tape when fixing a leak or making joints.
The tape should be wrapped around the thread of the pipe or the base of a tap.
Clockwise when viewed from the end of the pipe is the correct way to put it on.
Leaky Cistern
A clever way of checking to see if your cistern is leaking is to put in some food colouring.

Taps
Taps – If you are removing nice tap fittings (such as gold ones) for maintenance reasons, use a thick cloth to protect it from the jaws of the wrench, otherwise you’ll get a load of scratches on them.
More good advice – When taking a tap apart, always keep the plug in, to prevent anything useful falling down the plug hole.
Blocked Tap – Make sure you turn the water off at source before attempting to clear a blocked tap by taking it apart.
Blocked Sinks – If you are using a plunger, trying to unblock a blocked sink, cover up the overflow holes with a damp cloth. This helps build up the pressure.
Toilets – If your toilet ball float is leaking and filling with water here is a useful trick I learnt to tide you over until you can get a new one. Take off the float (by unscrewing it), empty it, then screw it back on and wrap it in a plastic bag.
Leaky Toilets. If you think that your toilet might be leaking slightly, check to see if the problem is not due to condensation before calling out a plumber. If you have condensation problems they can be solved by improved ventilation when bathing or showering

There are some really easy but very effective plumbing & Blocking drain tips that are sure save you a pretty penny.
Pipes
Tips on Plumbing Pipes
If you have a split pipe, instead of draining down the whole system you can buy ‘pipe freeze’, It comes with a jacket that you wrap around the pipe and you spray something very cold into it and it freezes the pipe for about 30-40 mins. Save time & money.
Starting Threads on Pipes
When threading pipes it is sometimes difficult to get started. You can make it easier by cutting slots in the end and then cutting off the end later.
Water Hammer
If your water pipes sometimes make a loud “hammering noise” after the toilet has been flushed or sink, etc. Ask at the hardware store for something for water hammer. It’s a fitting or some such thing which is easily installed in the line. A common problem and not very expensive
Ref ‘hammering water pipes’
This is caused by a pressure build up of water in the pipes. The simplest solution is to turn down your water pressure at the stop-cock. Repairs to low pressure water pipes can be carried out while the water is held back by stuffing bread up the pipe. It should remain in place long enough for a repair to be made.
Frozen Pipes
I find that the best way to melt the ice in frozen pipes is to put hot water bottles over them. I hear that using a hair-dryer is good as well.
Split Pipes
If your water pipe has split, a temporary fix you can do whilst waiting for a qualified plumber is to wrap torn strips of fabric very tightly around the break. Keep a large saucepan or bucket underneath the join to catch any drips.

Slow Draining Sinks:
Do you live in a older home and are starting to notice some wear and tear with your sinks, drains & plumbing?
In this weeks article we look at the dreadful slow draining sinks.
If you continuing to see your bathroom drains, laundry drains & kitchen drains chronically slow we have some plumbing tips for you that should fix this issue
The cause of the slow drains in older homes is typically due to a build of sludge in the plumbing pipes. Unfortunately as this has been building up for years no amount of plunging or chemicals is going to resolve this issue.
What is required from you or your handy man is to:
- Get onto the roof of your home with a Metal Stake (with a ballpein hammer preferably)
- Force the Stake down each of the drain lines with force so that you are entering the vent stacks
- Repeat up to 100 times to ensure that you have cleared as much of the build up as possible in the drain
If you are not feeling comfortable with climbing onto the roof to complete this necessary cleanup then I would recommend you contact a licensed Plumber in Melbourne.
I would recommend you contact O’Shea Plumbing & Blocked Drains for a 100% service guarantee on all plumbing jobs!

We wrap up our Plumbing Tips for Cleaning Up After Floods with our last set of plumbing & blocked drains tips to provide you with when cleaning up after floods.
To ensure that home is nearly ready for you to settle back in there is a couple of things that I would suggest doing. I know it may hit the pocket a little hard during this tough time but this could prevent serious damage in the future which would result in a bigger hit to your pocket later.
I recommend you get in contact with the following professionals:
Plumbers, to check over all the plumbing & drains of your home, The floods managed to destroy nearly everything in its path and as this massive amount of water gone completely through your home the chances are that the flood waters have also managed to damage some of your plumbing that you did not even know about.
Electricians, to check all the wiring of the house to ensure that the water damage has not affected the electrical work. This could result in a huge electrical catastrophe in your home.
Builders, if you are a little unsure on how sturdy your home is after such a large amount of water have come through. If there are any doubts I would call a builder as the last thing you need the flood water to damage or weaken key areas of your homes foundation that could result in another disaster for you.
Just be sure to take all the necessary precautions as your family & friends is the most important thing in the world and are also there for you, so don’t be afraid to ask for there assistance during this tough time.
Most importantly to all people affected by the floods, keep resilient & don’t let something like this get you down.
The night is darkest before dawn!

As a result of floods or flooding within your home, you must take every precaution to protect you, your family & friends by taking some of the suggested measures mentioned below:
- If you are able to get your hands on a high pressure water hose/ Water gurney/high pressure cleaner. This is a fantastic way of removing all of the initial mud, and grime that has been left throughout each of the rooms in your home.
- Now that you have managed to remove most of the build up of mud and grime you can now commence the thorough disinfecting of your home. I would start with floors, benches, tiles, walls, counters, sinks, etc.
- It is almost worth repeating the disinfecting stage to ensure that you have completing removed any bacteria and germs that may still be floating around due to raw sewerage being found in the flood waters.
- Once you are satisfied you have disinfected your home successfully you can now commence cleaning up yourself. I recommend all helpers involved in the clean up ensure that you thoroughly wash yourself to remove the chances of getting something from your infested clothes.
